About this Sales Tax Calculator

This tool is built for real-world checkouts. You can enter multiple items with their quantities, mark each line as taxable or exempt, and choose whether prices already include tax (like many international receipts) or exclude tax (typical in most U.S. states). If your location splits sales tax into state and local pieces, switch to “Split” mode to see each part. You can also model shipping and discounts, and decide whether discounts reduce the taxable base before tax or after tax. Rounding can be done at the order level or per line to mirror different POS systems. When you’re done, export everything to CSV for your records or bookkeeping.

FAQ

Why don’t my numbers match the receipt by a few cents? Many registers use per-line rounding; others use order-level rounding. Switch the rounding mode to match the store’s behavior.

Is shipping taxable? It depends on the state and whether it’s a delivery charge or handling. This tool doesn’t decide the rule for you—it lets you toggle the taxability to match your jurisdiction.

Do coupons reduce tax? Manufacturer coupons often reduce the taxable base; store coupons sometimes reduce after tax. Choose the discount timing that applies to your case.

Does it handle special product categories? Not specifically (e.g., alcohol, lodging, telecom). If an item is taxed differently, add it as a separate line and adjust taxability or rate as needed.
