Pick a percent, split with your group, add sales tax, and choose rounding. Works great on mobile at the table.

This fast, mobile-friendly tip calculator helps you land on a fair tip without doing mental math at the table. Enter the pre-tax subtotal, add your local sales tax if you know it, choose a tip percentage or type a custom value, and decide whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. You can split the bill across any number of people and optionally round the tip, the grand total, or the per-person total to whole dollars for cleaner payments. Everything runs locally in your browser so it is quick and private. If your receipt shows only the grand total, switch to grand-total mode and the tool will back out the pre-tax amount using your sales tax rate.
The Summary table shows the computed sales tax from your rate, the tip amount at the chosen percentage, and the grand total. The Per-person table displays how much each person owes, including both tip and tax, along with the per-person share of the tip. If you enable rounding, the calculator adjusts the selected target and recomputes the others so everything still adds up. For example, if you round the total up by 42 cents, the tool increases the tip by 42 cents. If you round per-person to whole dollars, it scales the grand total to match exactly. When you use grand-total mode, the tool derives a pre-tax base from your total and rate so your percent math remains accurate.
For quick context, 18% to 20% is a common range for good service in many U.S. cities. Larger groups, special requests, or extended table time can justify a higher percent. If service was truly poor, many diners still leave a smaller tip rather than zero. This tool does the arithmetic either way so you can focus on the conversation rather than the calculator.
Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax? That is preference and local custom. Pre-tax is common, but some people tip on the total. The calculator supports both so you can choose.
What percent should I use? In many U.S. cities, 18% to 20% is typical for good service. Use presets for speed or set any custom percentage for special cases.
How does rounding work? Rounding tweaks the selected value to a whole dollar and adjusts the other numbers so your math still balances.
Why is my subtotal different when I only know the grand total? In grand-total mode, the tool backs out the pre-tax amount from the total using your tax rate so your tip base is accurate.
