NYS plus optional NYC resident tax. Uses 2025 rate schedules and standard deductions. This is a simplified estimator.
About this 2025 NYS & NYC tax calculator
This page estimates your 2025 New York State income tax and, if you choose, your New York City resident income tax.
Enter your filing status and income, pick the standard or itemized deduction, and we’ll show a bracket-by-bracket breakdown plus your
marginal and effective rates. NYC School Tax Credits are modeled simply and applied when toggled on and you qualify. For federal and capital-gains
questions, hop to the Federal Income Tax and Capital Gains & Qualified Dividends tools.
How to use it
- Pick filing status. This sets your NYS standard deduction and brackets (and NYC thresholds if you enable NYC).
- Enter NY income. Include wages, self-employment income, interest, and other ordinary income taxable by NY.
Most capital gains are taxed at ordinary rates in NY.
- Adjustments. Enter any New York additions/subtractions (Schedule A/B style adjustments) to approximate your NY AGI.
- Deduction. Choose standard or itemized; if you itemize, enter the amount you’ll claim on your NY return.
- NYC tax (optional). Toggle “Include NYC tax.” If yes, confirm you’re a full-year resident and whether you’re a dependent.
You can also apply the fixed NYC School Tax Credit and the rate-reduction credit when eligible.
- Calculate & export. Click Calculate for an instant breakdown. Use Download CSV to export your results.
Reading your results
- NYS taxable income is your NY AGI minus the deduction you selected. That flows into the state’s progressive brackets.
- Marginal rate is the rate on the next dollar of taxable income. It’s useful for “what-if” planning.
- Effective rate is total tax divided by taxable income. It’s your blended burden across all brackets.
- NYC tax uses a separate progressive schedule. We approximate NYC taxable income as NYS taxable income for most filers
(mirroring IT-201 line 47 ≈ line 38). Credits are subtracted after NYC tax is computed.
- CSV export includes your inputs, intermediate figures (AGI, deduction used), bracket lines, and totals.
FAQ
Does this include every NYS/NYC credit? No. It models NYS nonrefundable credits as a single dollar amount and the two NYC School Tax Credits. Household credit and others are not included.
What about capital gains? NYS and NYC generally tax most capital gains as ordinary income. If you need federal preferential rates on long-term gains or qualified dividends, use the Capital Gains tool.
Are 2025 brackets final? This calculator is wired for 2025. If final NYS/NYC figures differ from prior-year thresholds, you can update the constants at the top of the script; all math recalculates instantly.
Is this tax advice? Nope. It’s an estimator meant for planning. Your actual return may include additional lines, limits, addbacks, or phaseouts.
