Asphalt Calculator

Last updated:

Pick units and enter area and thickness. We estimate volume, tons, trucks, base aggregate, tack coat, and cost.

Overview

Planning asphalt work shouldn’t require a spreadsheet. This calculator turns driveway and parking-lot dimensions into clear numbers: compacted thickness, material volume, tons, truckloads, and optional base aggregate and tack coat. Switch between US and metric, set your own density and waste allowance, and add pricing to see a quick cost snapshot. When you’re done, export a CSV you can share with a supplier or drop into a quote.

Use it for new installs, overlays, or patching. Enter a single rectangle or break irregular sites into multiple areas and we’ll total everything for you. If your spec calls for a binder layer under the surface lift, enable it and the tool will calculate each lift separately. Base stone and tack are optional but useful when you’re pricing from subgrade up or planning a mill-and-fill.

Heads-up: results are estimates. Real-world outcomes depend on mix design, compaction, weather, base prep, and crew technique. Confirm local specs and supplier guidance, then round up to avoid short loads and downtime. Related materials: Concrete · Lumber · Tile

How to use this asphalt calculator

  1. Select Units (US or Metric) and set Waste, Truck capacity, and Asphalt density if needed.
  2. Enter Layers & pricing: surface thickness (and binder if used) with optional price per ton to estimate cost.
  3. (Optional) Add Aggregate base and Tack coat with densities and pricing.
  4. Choose Single rectangle or Multiple areas. Enter dimensions and click Calculate.
  5. Review Summary and Materials, then Download CSV for your records or quote.

Tip: For irregular shapes, break the site into rectangles and use “Multiple areas.”

FAQ

What thickness should I use for a driveway vs. a parking lot?

Driveways often use 2–3 in surface; light-duty parking 3–4 in; heavy-duty areas may add a binder layer. Always follow local specs.

What density should I enter?

145 lb/ft³ is common for compacted hot-mix asphalt. Your supplier can provide a more accurate value for your mix.

Does the calculator include compaction?

Yes. Enter compacted thickness. If you only know loose thickness per lift, convert to compacted thickness before entering.

Are delivery and mobilization included in cost?

No. Enter per-ton and per-gallon material prices. Add trucking, mobilization, and taxes separately in your estimate.
